Choice Reading

Children are completely free to choose what they read: books, comics, magazines, or informational texts. Free choice is one of the most powerful levers for intrinsic reading motivation.

What Is It?

Choice reading is a reading activity in which children are completely free to choose what they read: books at any level, magazines, comics, informational texts, or digital texts that interest them. The freedom of choice itself is the instructional tool.

Materials Needed

  • A varied classroom library or access to the school library
  • Diverse reading materials: books, magazines, comics, informational texts
  • A cozy reading corner or other spots around the classroom

How It Works

  1. Assemble a broad and varied collection of materials.
  2. Give students time to browse and choose.
  3. Students freely choose what they want to read.
  4. Allow 15 to 30 minutes of uninterrupted reading time.
  5. Optionally close with a brief moment to share reading tips.

Learning Goals

  • Develop intrinsic reading motivation
  • Discover personal reading interests and preferences
  • Experience reading as an enjoyable activity
  • Build reading stamina

Tips

  • Trust the child's choice. Comics and magazines are valuable reading material too.
  • Read yourself during choice reading; your modeling is powerful.
  • Create a calm, inviting atmosphere without time pressure.
  • Don't force it. Entice students by making the collection appealing.

Variations

  • Free reading moments: Short choice-reading windows throughout the day
  • Book sharing: The whole class reads different books and shares experiences
  • Theme choice: Choose within a set theme (animals, adventure, humor)
  • Genre month: Focus on a different genre each month
  • Reading week: A full week of extended choice reading
