Tea Reading

A cup of tea, a cushion, and a good book. Tea reading turns the reading session into a mini-ritual and builds a lasting positive association with reading.

What Is It?

Tea reading is a cozy reading activity in which students read quietly in a relaxed atmosphere, with a warm drink and optionally a small snack. The focus is less on technique and more on experience: reading as something enjoyable, not a task.

Materials Needed

  • Tea bags (herbal or caffeine-free options work well)
  • Cups or mugs
  • Optional: small biscuits or a healthy snack
  • Cushions or beanbags for a cozy atmosphere
  • Reading books of the students' choice

How It Works

  1. Create a cozy reading corner in the classroom with cushions.
  2. Pour a cup of tea for each student.
  3. Students choose their own book.
  4. Everyone reads silently in a relaxed atmosphere.
  5. Optionally close with a brief moment for students to share what they read.

Learning Goals

  • Increase reading enjoyment through positive association
  • Practice sustained silent reading
  • Improve concentration and perseverance
  • Experience reading as relaxation, not obligation

Tips

  • Do this at fixed moments to make it a ritual (e.g., every Friday afternoon).
  • Create a warm, calm atmosphere. Dim the lights if possible.
  • Let students choose their own reading spot.
  • Be mindful of allergies and dietary needs when distributing snacks.

Variations

  • Candlelight reading: With (LED) candles for extra atmosphere
  • Winter reading: With hot chocolate in winter
  • Picnic reading: Outside on a blanket with lemonade
  • Seasonal reading: Adapt the drink and setting to each season
